Airport Police and Fire Officers (APFOs) are State Certified Firefighter I, Firefighter II and Aircraft Rescue Firefighters certified by the Alaska Fire Standards Council (AFSC). Initial Fire training and certification requirements include completion of the IFSAC approved Firefighter I, Firefighter II and ARFF courses. A typical Airport Police and Fire Officer Recruit will undergo 12 months of training and evaluation before being a fully certified and operational APFO.
Many advanced training opportunities exist for officers who wish to specialize in a particular field. Some officers volunteer for area fire departments as well as possess advanced training and certification as: Fire Instructor I & II, Fire Extinguisher Inspector II, Fire Officer I, and Hazardous Materials Technician.
