Contact information is preferred, but if you wish to remain anonymous, you have the ability to choose this option using our form.
What is SMS?
SMS, or Safety Management Systems, is a formal method for managing safety with a focus on proactive risk mitigation. SMS builds on an organizations current safety program; is systematic, structured and data driven; requires senior leadership commitment; treats safety as a core value; and seeks to proactively mitigate hazards and their associated risks. In order for an SMS to be effective, it requires participation from employees at all levels within the organization.
The Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) is in the process of launching SMS to aid our efforts of delivering a safe and customer friendly experience to all who work and visit the airport.
Safety Policy Statement
Fairbanks International Airport management believes that safety is a core value and is committed to the prevention of incidents and accidents that may negatively impact life or safety while protecting property and the environment.
FAI believes that, through proactive identification and mitigation of hazards, all accidents are preventable. We recognize that an effective Safety Management System (SMS) is crucial in achieving our goals and objectives and attaining the highest levels of safety performance.
Safety is everyone's responsibility and the active participation of all airport and tenant employees, regardless of job title, is crucial to the success of the SMS. As such, FAI is committed to:
- Providing the safest possible work and travel environments.
- Promoting a culture of safety across all airport operations and encouraging all staff, stakeholders and visitors to report all safety concerns, hazards and incidents.
- Ensuring that no action will be taken against any airport staff, stakeholder or visitor who reports a safety concern unless such disclosure indicates, beyond any reasonable doubt, an illegal act, gross negligence or a deliberate or willful disregard of regulations, policies or procedures.
- Providing the resources and training necessary to address safety issues and continuously improve safety performance.
- Clearly defining for all staff, their accountabilities and responsibilities in achieving the highest level of safety performance and the performance of our SMS.
- Complying with, at a minimum and wherever possible exceeding, legislative and regulatory requirements.

Safety Reporting Policy
Every employee and stakeholder is responsible for communicating any information that may affect the integrity of Airport operations. SMS; however, is not for the reporting of accidents or criminal activities requiring an immediate or emergency response, which should be reported by calling 911.
Any other urgent information requiring immediate non-emergency attention should be directed to the Airport Communications Center at (907) 474-2530.

This form should be used to report an incident, accident, or any existing or potentially hazardous behaviors or conditions at the Fairbanks International Airport.
All emergencies or hazards that need immediate attention should be reported by contacting the Airport Communications Center at (907) 474-2530.
Confidentiality Commitment
The Fairbanks International Airport SMS Team is able to ensure confidentiality of your report. Three reporting options are available:
- You can choose to report anonymously by omitting your contact information
- Your contact information can be protected by providing ONLY your badge number which is visible only to the Safety Team. No other contact information is required.
- You can provide your contact information.
If you provide your name, number, and phone, this information is subject to public disclosure under the federal freedom of information act (FOIA) and can be released upon request; therefore, it is not protected or confidential.
This confidentiality commitment does NOT apply to willful disregard to health and safety, regulations or laws, or negligent acts committed on the airport.
