Alaska's Transportation Workforce Detours: Maximizing training opportunities and outcomes in DOT&PF's key industries
We're working to increase workforce participation in Alaska's priority occupations!
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in partnership with the University of Alaska Anchorage's Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER), has completed a comprehensive study to better understand and strengthen Alaska's transportation workforce. This research examines nine priority occupations vital to the state's transportation system and infrastructure: construction laborers, carpenters, cement masons, electrical workers, ironworkers, operating engineers, pile drivers, plumbers & pipefitters, and truck drivers. By analyzing statewide labor market data, surveying training programs, and engaging directly with industry partners, the study provides a clear picture of both current workforce capacity and future demand.
Key findings highlight:
- Projected workforce needs across Alaska's construction trades.
- Existing training opportunities and where additional support is needed.
- Barriers to recruitment and retention, especially for women, people of color, and rural residents.
- Actionable strategies to expand training access, improve career pathways, and ensure more Alaskans are ready to fill these critical jobs.
This report is a valuable resource for unions, training providers, contractors, and community partners working together to grow a strong, skilled, and inclusive workforce. By aligning education, training, and industry needs, Alaska can better meet its infrastructure goals while creating lasting career opportunities for its residents.
