SAFE SYSTEM APPROACH

Alaska DOT&PF, alongside the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, has adopted a Safe System Approach to address roadway safety across Alaska. The Safe System Approach focuses on preventing crashes and minimizing harm to people when crashes do occur with the goal of working toward a future with zero roadway fatalities and serious injuries.

PRINCIPLES OF A SAFE SYSTEM APPROACH

We base our safety efforts on the following principles of a Safe System Approach:

• Death and Serious Injuries are Unacceptable
• Humans Make Mistakes
• Humans are Vulnerable
• Responsibility is Shared
• Safety is Proactive
• Redundancy is Crucial

OBJECTIVES OF A SAFE SYSTEM APPROACH

As we work toward a future with zero roadway fatalities and serious injuries, we focus on the following objectives:

• Safer Roads
• Post-Crash Care
