WHAT DO WE DO WITH ALL THIS DATA?

Ultimately, we use data to make decisions:

  • We use subsurface temperature data from our road weather stations to decide when to lift weight restrictions.
  • We use traffic data to determine whether or not we should install a signal or a stop sign at an intersection.
  • We use pavement condition data to decide where to send our maintenance crews over the summer.
  • We use crash data to decide where to prioritize safety improvement projects.

Those are just a few examples showing how integral data is to every part of our department's operations

In addition to its importance to internal decision-making, we are required to collect some data to share with the federal government, a requirement in order to continue receiving federal funding. Examples include inventories of our assets (like infrastructure, signs, lane miles), pavement condition data, traffic data, route information, and more. Alaska's data is used alongside other states to develop economic forecasts, determine federal funding levels, and more.
