4th Floor Parking Garage
The South Terminal parking garage renovations are complete! All parking areas at both the North and South Terminals are now open, and we thank the traveling public for their patience and flexibility during the construction over the past two summers. While the summer busy season is behind us, we still recommend travelers consider using the Park, Ride, and Fly lot or the North Terminal during peak travel periods in the future. All parking options are now fully available.
ANC Triennial
Thank you to all the volunteers, law enforcement officers, first responders, and others who assisted ANC with its Triennial Exercise on August 21st. First responders from Chugiak to Girdwood supported Airport Police and Fire in this critical exercise.

ANC hosted them for two tours: one with Airport Police and Fire, and another on the airfield with our Operations team. If you're interested, check out the Alaska Aviation Museum's website for openings in 2025.

However, there will be a large presence of emergency vehicles, such as ambulances and police cars, at the North Terminal throughout the day. Please be aware that this is just a training exercise and not a cause for concern.

No RVs or Other Oversized Vehicles Under the South Terminal Loop Bridge:
A gentle reminder that any vehicle over 10'6" (RVs, sprinter vans, oversize vehicles, etc.) must use the commercial curb at the South Terminal. There is a sign with flashing lights to warn drivers of the height restriction before the entrance under the South Terminal Loop bridge. There is also a safe turnout to use to switch to the commercial pickup curb.
RV damage caused from hitting the underside of the bridge can be substantial, not to mention the cost of damage to ANC infrastructure. If you do not know how tall your vehicle is, please do not go under the Terminal Loop Bridge.
Construction at the Airport:
ANC is doing an extension of Taxi way Z, which is near South Airport Park (near Kulis). Construction is ongoing 7 days a week with heavy equipment running from 7am to 7pm. Occasionally the contractor will perform maintenance on the equipment during evening hours. The project is slated to be completed on Oct. 1. The Airport is working with the contractor to keep construction-related noise to a minimum.

Lake Hood Seaplane Base:
In July, aquatic plant control efforts will take place. Overgrowth of vegetation in the water can be hazardous. Only aircraft and authorized ANC vehicles are allowed on lake surfaces. No swimming is permitted, and pet owners are encouraged to keep their animals leashed and out of the lake.
Also in July, a volunteer group will conduct plant control for Orange hawkweed along the south shore of Lake Spenard. Orange hawkweed, while pretty in appearance, is an invasive species that can quickly overwhelm native plant diversity.
Alaska Aviation Museum
On Saturday, July 15, the Alaska Aviation Museum is holding its annual Aviation Festival. For details, contact the museum directly at 907-248-5325.
Wildlife on Airport:
Moose frequently wander into areas around the airport where they are in dangerously close proximity to humans. Making potential encounters more precarious is that cow moose are now accompanied by calves. Cows with calves are more aggressive than normal. People are heavily advised to steer clear of wildlife whether on a local trail, near a roadway or in a parking area.

There's Probably a Permit for That…
What are you doing at the airport? If you are on ANC property providing a commercial service like a rideshare, operating a food truck or offering some other business, chances are you need a permit. Unless a lease, permit, or concession expressly authorized the person to operate the business, a person must hold a current Business Activity Permit issued before selling, offering for sale, or providing goods or services commercially anywhere on the Airport regardless of the duration of the activity. Contact Brandon Tucker in our leasing department for help acquiring your Business Activity Permit at brandon.tucker@alaska.gov.

Lake Hood Seaplane Base:
Brrrrrrrr!! Do you feel that winter chill in the air? It means Lake Hood, the world's largest sea plane base, is beginning to freeze. Plane owners are in the process of switching from floats to skies to be able to land on the ice, when it is thick enough. No matter how tempting, no people or pets are allowed on lake surfaces; only aircraft and official ANC field maintenance personnel are allowed. As always, all pets must be on a leash on ANC property, this is for everyone's safety.

The rehabilitation of the terminal loop road required a six-inch elevation of the road under the terminal loop bridge. Signage posted prior to the bridge displays the maximum height a vehicle can be to drive under the bridge (10' 6") to make it out the other side unscathed. There have been multiple incidents where RVs have collided with the bridge. If you have an RV that previously fit under the bridge, do not assume it will make it through in the future. Motorist driving RVs or tall passenger vans are highly encouraged to use the commercial curb when picking up their loved ones at ANC.

All passenger departing ANC, including on international flights, must check-in at the South Terminal. Once checked in, any international passenger departing from the North Terminal, will be directed appropriately. While ANC has made several efforts to educate our visitors, there are still some select passengers getting dropped off at the North Terminal expecting to check in. ANC greatly appreciates your support and assistance in alerting the traveling public to the international check-in at the South Terminal.
International travelers arriving from Europe (Condor and Eurowings Discover) deplane at the North Terminal.

The federal government recently awarded ANC approximately $2.4 million in grant funds, through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law's Airport Terminal Program, to replace the B9 PBB. The B9 PBB, installed in the early 90s, is the oldest in the South Terminal. If and when the current PBB breaks down, maintenance is challenging as many of the parts for the current PBB are obsolete and difficult to acquire. The upgrade will provide a distinct safety and operational enhancement to airport operations. ANC plans to put the project out to bid this fall. Construction is planned to occur Summer of 2023.

Well, to cut one more pointless circle out of your life, how about visiting our lovely, FREE cell phone parking lot that overlooks the world's largest seaplane base— the pristine, one(two?)-of-a-kind Lakes Hood and Spenard. Especially with construction of the Terminal Loop Road, parked or idling vehicles at curb present safety issues and traffic congestion. Alaska is open for business, and we are spiffying up our welcome mat right here at ANC. Seat capacity coming into ANC is slated at roughly 5% higher than pre-pandemic summer travel in 2019. That is exciting news as Alaska has a robust tourism industry which helps charge the economy for Anchorage and the state.
April (snow) showers brings May flowers… and rubbish hidden from the winter's worth of snow melting away. May 6 is Clean Up Day for ANC. If you would like to participate on the day, or on your own schedule, you can pick up trash bags from Airfield Maintenance shop at 4100 Aircraft Drive. We appreciate all the help we can get keeping airport property looking its best.
Walk MS: Anchorage 2022 will take you for a lovely stroll, rain, or shine, around the Lake Hood Seaplane Base on May 14 at 1000 AM. The event starts and finishes at the Lake Front Hotel (4800 Spenard Rd.). Be sure to say hello to Airport Police and Fire's 'Team Q' while you are there. Our officers are walking to show support for a beloved co-worker that lives with MS. More information regarding Walk MS: Anchorage 2022 can be found online at Walk MS: Anchorage 2022 (donordrive.com).
Going… going… soooo close… When will the ice go out?? Short answer is, we don't know. History and current conditions tell us that the first week of May is a good bet, but the ice can go out any time from late-April to mid-May. The ice condition fluctuates due to Spring temperatures, sun exposure, and wind. Pilots should always check the FAA NOTAMs prior to utilizing the aerodrome to verify up-to-date weather and ice conditions. Only aircraft and ANC official vehicles are allowed on Lake Hood and Lake Spenard. NO PEOPLE OR PETS ARE ALLOWED on lake surfaces, this is for everyone's safety.
