South Terminal Parking Garage Construction Completion:
The ANC South Terminal Parking Garage will be fully open and operational Friday, November 10, 2023! Hurray! Thank you to all our travelers, Anchorage-ites and Alaska residents for their patience during a long construction season. Although the full restoration of the parking garage will expand ANC parking capacity, we ask the traveling public to continue to have a parking plan. Airport parking was slightly constricted prior to garage construction and will likely continue, especially as we approach holiday traveling season.
Snow Removal:
ANC's award-winning Airfield Maintenance Team, who maintains our 24-hour-a-day operation on the ANC airfield, also coordinates snow removal on our sidewalks and parking areas. If you see areas marked off, it is for snow storage to facilitate cleaner parking lots, walkways and sidewalks. The public's cooperation in helping us keep our parking areas and sidewalks snow-free, is greatly appreciated.
New Passenger Flight Announcements
Recently, Alaska Airlines announced two new routes for Summer 2024. The first is a daily roundtrip from Anchorage to JFK in New York and the second is a once-a-week flight to San Diego. Both are seasonal flights. In addition, Delta Airlines announced a new route from Anchorage to Detroit, Michigan that will operate weekend service seasonally for Summer 2024.

Lake Hood Seaplane Base:
In July, aquatic plant control efforts will take place. Overgrowth of vegetation in the water can be hazardous. Only aircraft and authorized ANC vehicles are allowed on lake surfaces. No swimming is permitted, and pet owners are encouraged to keep their animals leashed and out of the lake.
Also in July, a volunteer group will conduct plant control for Orange hawkweed along the south shore of Lake Spenard. Orange hawkweed, while pretty in appearance, is an invasive species that can quickly overwhelm native plant diversity.

Wildlife on Airport:
Moose frequently wander into areas around the airport where they are in dangerously close proximity to humans. The rehabilitation of the terminal loop road required a six-inch elevation of the road under the terminal loop bridge. Signage posted prior to the bridge displays the maximum height a vehicle can be to drive under the bridge (10' 6") to make it out the other side unscathed. There have been multiple incidents where RVs have collided with the bridge. If you have an RV that previously fit under the bridge, do not assume it will make it through in the future. Motorist driving RVs or tall passenger vans are highly encouraged to use the commercial curb when picking up their loved ones at ANC.

All passenger departing ANC, including on international flights, must check-in at the South Terminal. Once checked in, any international passenger departing from the North Terminal, will be directed appropriately. ANC greatly appreciates your support and assistance in alerting the traveling public to the international check-in at the South Terminal.

The federal government recently awarded ANC approximately $2.4 million in grant funds, through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law's Airport Terminal Program, to replace the B9 PBB. The B9 PBB, installed in the early 90s, is the oldest in the South Terminal. If and when the current PBB breaks down, maintenance is challenging as many of the parts for the current PBB are obsolete and difficult to acquire. The upgrade will provide a distinct safety and operational enhancement to airport operations. ANC plans to put the project out to bid this fall. Construction is planned to occur Summer of 2023.

Especially with construction of the Terminal Loop Road, parked or idling vehicles at curb present safety issues and traffic congestion. Alaska is open for business, and we are spiffying up our welcome mat right here at ANC. Seat capacity coming into ANC is slated at roughly 5% higher than pre-pandemic summer travel in 2019. That is exciting news as Alaska has a robust tourism industry which helps charge the economy for Anchorage and the state.
April (snow) showers brings May flowers… and rubbish hidden from the winter's worth of snow melting away. May 6 is Clean Up Day for ANC. If you would like to participate on the day, or on your own schedule, you can pick up trash bags from Airfield Maintenance shop at 4100 Aircraft Drive. We appreciate all the help we can get keeping airport property looking its best.
Walk MS: Anchorage 2022 will take you for a lovely stroll, rain, or shine, around the Lake Hood Seaplane Base on May 14 at 1000 AM. The event starts and finishes at the Lake Front Hotel (4800 Spenard Rd.). Be sure to say hello to Airport Police and Fire's 'Team Q' while you are there. Our officers are walking to show support for a beloved co-worker that lives with MS. More information regarding Walk MS: Anchorage 2022 can be found online at Walk MS: Anchorage 2022 (donordrive.com).
Going… going… soooo close… When will the ice go out?? Short answer is, we don't know. History and current conditions tell us that the first week of May is a good bet, but the ice can go out any time from late-April to mid-May. The ice condition fluctuates due to Spring temperatures, sun exposure, and wind. Pilots should always check the FAA NOTAMs prior to utilizing the aerodrome to verify up-to-date weather and ice conditions. Only aircraft and ANC official vehicles are allowed on Lake Hood and Lake Spenard. NO PEOPLE OR PETS ARE ALLOWED on lake surfaces, this is for everyone's safety.
