Prince of Wales Threemile Creek Improvements
State Project No.: SFHWY00615 | Federal Project No.: 0924021
Project Overview
The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing a new bridge at MP 11.62 Craig/Klawock/Hollis Highway on Prince of Wales Island. The new bridge replaces two (2) existing 14 foot diameter ellipsoidal culverts and constructs improvements to Threemile Creek up and downstream of the new bridge.
Purpose & Need
The purpose of this project is to reduce flooding of the roadway at the stream crossing and to improve fish passage to upstream habitat by:
- Building a bridge that meets seismic codes and approach roadway width
- Raising the roadway grade to meet the elevated bridge grade
- Placing streambank erosion protection
- Making stream habitat improvements
Project Description
Proposed work includes:
- Reconstruction of the roadway on either end of the bridge approaches, including borrow/embankment placement, base course and hot mix asphalt pavement (HMA), new guardrail, signage and striping
- New concrete multi-girder bridge structure with pile-driven foundation
- New riprap rock placement along streambanks to prevent erosion
- Stream improvements including engineered log features (jacks, deflectors, long wedges), profile grading and placement of streambed material
Project History
This project is funded through an FHWA AOP Culvert Grant, awarded following several years of collaboration between DOT&PF and USFWS to identify dedicated funding sources, along with ongoing participation and consultation with the local tribe and community.
Status
The project is currently in the design phase. Construction is anticipated to occur in 2027.
Temporary Traffic Disruptions
- Delays are anticipated during the construction of this project
