Ensuring the safety of tunnel users is the top priority. To that end, the size of vehicles that can pass through the tunnel will be limited.
Under normal operations, the following are the maximum dimensions of vehicles allowed to use the tunnel:
PLEASE NOTE - per the Commissioner's best interest finding the length limitations have been increased from 75 to 80 feet. This has not been changed in regulation, but will be changed the next time the regulations are updated.
Maximum dimensions of vehicles allowed under normal operations
Larger vehicles will be allowed to use the tunnel during special openings scheduled three to four times a week. The hours of special operations will be updated periodically and will be shown on the Schedule page of this web site. These hours will change seasonally to best serve the requirements of the traveling public. According to the regulations, the following are the dimensions of vehicles allowed to use the tunnel during special operations:
PLEASE NOTE THAT OVERWEIGHT VEHICLES WILL NOT BE PERMITTED IN THE TUNNEL. CONTACT THE ALASKA RAILROAD TO MAKE TRANSPORTATION ARRANGEMENTS.
Maximum dimensions of vehicles allowed under special operations
Contact the Alaska Railroad at 265-2495 to make arrangements for transporting an oversized vehicle on the train. See the Tunnel Regulations page for a copy of the complete proposed regulations.
Dangerous and objectionable materials will not be allowed through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. This material will not be allowed to ensure the safety and the comfort of the traveling public. Hazardous materials that are required by federal law to display a placard (hazardous material sign) will not be allowed through the tunnel except by railroad. Contact the Alaska Railroad at 265-2495 to make arrangements for transporting hazardous materials on the train.
Other materials have the following limits:
Tunnel operators may prohibit any load that they do not deem to be safe or tied down securely. They may also prohibit any load that is incompatible with the operation of the tunnel.
