King Salmon Airport Apron & Taxiway Rehabilitation

Project # SFAPT00563

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing to rehabilitate the pavement surfaces of the General Aviation and Terminal aprons and Taxiways A, D, G and parts of C at the King Salmon Airport along with lighting and other improvements. DOT&PF has informed Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Alaskan Region of their intent to apply for federal funding assistance for the proposed project.

Purpose & Need

The rehabilitation of pavement needs to occur to keep the King Salmon Airport in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and to continue operating safely. All lighting to be replaced is at or beyond service life. The FAA has recommended to replace the existing windcone because the lighting is difficult to see at night. Backup power is needed at the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Building; in 2022, there were 23 power outages and a total of 193 hours of no power.

Project Description

DOT&PF is proposing the following activities:

  • Rehabilitate Taxiway A, D, G, and the west cide of C
  • Rehabilitate General Aviation (GA) and Terminal aprons
  • Replace lighting for Taxiways A, B, C, D, E, and G
  • Replace lighting for the Terminal GA and Transient Aprons
  • Replace lighting for both runways
  • Replace primary wind cone for Runway 12-30
  • Run an underground power line from the ARFF Building to the existing emergency generator

Construction is tentatively scheduled to take place in 2028.

Status

The project is in the conceptual design phase. DOT&PF is seeking input from airport users and the community of King Salmon. The DOT&PF project team will host a public open house for interested parties on July 10, 2025. Graphics from this open house are provided on the Documents page. Additional comments are being accepted on the Public Involvement page.
