Project # SFAPT00483
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing several airport improvements to the King Cove Airport including resurfacing runway, taxiway, apron, and access road, replacement of lighting, fencing and gates repairs, and addressing erosion and ponding issues. DOT&PF has informed Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Alaskan Region of their intent to apply for federal funding assistance for the proposed project.
Purpose & NeedThe purpose of the proposed project is to upgrade existing aviation facilities to meet current FAA standards and ensure safe and reliable use of the King Cove Airport. The project is needed to improve the airport runway, taxiway, apron, and access road surfaces which have degraded over time. Additionally, there are areas where fencing needs to be repaired. The main access gate has become inoperable and requires replacement. The segmented circle with wind cone and the supplemental wind cone have exceeded their useful life; also, the segmented circle penetrates the Runway Object Free Area (ROFA). The airport rotating beacon has fallen to the ground due to rust. The airport lighting system has also outlived its life expectancy and requires replacement. There are alders growing inside the ROFA, which now creates an obstruction and needs to be removed. The culverts will be inspected and will be replaced if appropriate.
Project DescriptionThe proposed project would:
Material is anticipated to be sourced from either the Airport Access Road Quarry or the Lenard Harbor Material Site. Determination will be based on quality of material identified during geotechnical investigation. The project is anticipated to need approximately 26,450 cubic yards of crushed aggregate surface course.
StatusThe project is in the design phase. Comments are being accepted on the Public Involvement page.
