Funter Bay Cannery Float Restoration

Project # SHARB00651

Project Overview

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) in partnership with the Alaska Department and Fish and Game (ADF&G) and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration (SFR) Program is proposing to restore the Funter Bay Cannery Float in Funter Bay, Alaska.

Damage to the facility occurred during the winter of 2025–2026, rendering portions of this facility unusable until repairs can be made and/or the project is completed. At this time, funding is not available to replace the seaplane float in the proposed project and DOT&PF has no intention to install seaplane accommodations in the near future. The facility will accommodate a new seaplane landing float should funding be secured or if other circumstances allow.

Engineering development activities are anticipated to conclude in late fall 2026. Construction is projected to begin in 2027. This project has limited funding. Additional improvements such as expansion or the inclusion of features other than restoring the existing facility to a safe and functional condition for the boating public are not possible at this time

Project Description

The proposed project includes:

  • Removing and disposing of existing timber and steel piles
  • Relocating a 10’ x 125’ float
  • Refurbishing the 6’ x 119’ approach and existing 6’ x 50’ gangway
  • Removing and replacing the existing 10’ x 50’ float with a new timber 12’ x 50’ float
  • Removing and disposing of existing 24’ x 36’ seaplane float

PARTIAL CLOSURE

The Funter Bay Cannery Float facility sustained extensive damage over the winter, leaving portions unsafe and unusable until repairs can be completed. The shore access float, pedestrian gangway, and approach trestle are currently closed. As an interim measure, the gangway and damaged gangway float will be removed to further stabilize the site.

The primary mooring float remains available for transient boaters; however, shore access is not maintained until project completion. Remaining structures are in varying stages of deterioration and users should exercise caution. Large vessel use and unattended moorage are discouraged.
