The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) plans to improve the Cold Bay Airport by replacing existing fencing, replacing and upgrading existing gates, installing new fencing to fully enclose the airfield, and provide a bear skirt on all fencing installed. All paved driveways through the existing gates will be improved to accommodate the newly installed gate systems.
Cold Bay Airport serves the City of Cold Bay, located in the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge at the western end of the Alaska Peninsula. It lies 634 miles southwest of Anchorage and 180 miles northeast of Unalaska. Cold Bay was incorporated in Alaska as a Second-Class City in 1981. Cold Bay Airport covers 2,213 acres and has two asphalt paved runways: 15/33 is 10,179 by 150 feet and 8/26 is 4,900 by 150 feet. Cold Bay's main runway is the fifth-longest in Alaska, serves as an alternate emergency landing area for trans-Pacific aircraft navigating Great Circle flight paths, and is equipped with air navigation aids supporting instrument landing approaches.
