Juneau Back Loop Road: Mendenhall Loop Road to Glacier Highway Resurface

State Project No. SFHWY00262 / Federal Project No. 0966029

Back Loop Road project site plan
Project Overview

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing to resurface Back Loop Road and Mendenhall Loop Road to Glacier Highway in Juneau, Alaska.

The purpose of this project is to resurface the road surface to prolong the life of the roadway and increase the quality of the drive surface from its current condition, as the pavement is nearing the end of its lifecycle. Certain locations are experiencing rutting and delamination as well. Improvements to the road and other amenities would allow safe and continued use for the traveling public and its users.

Project Description

DOT&PF is proposing the following project activities:

  • Resurface Back Loop Road from Mendenhall Loop Road to Glacier Highway
  • Upgrade drainage treatments, signage, guardrail, striping, and non-motorized facilities to current standards within the vicinity of the pavement resurfacing
  • Address structural needs for the road and bridges along Back Loop Road
Construction

The project is anticipated to begin construction in late 2027 and continue through two construction seasons.

During construction, roadway users should expect shoulder closures and minor delays with two-lane traffic maintained during most of the work in construction. Brief flagger controlled single-lane operations may be needed during paving. A short-term road closure may be required at Lake Creek 2 during culvert replacement and detours may be required. This traffic control statement is preliminary, and specific traffic impacts will be determined as the design progresses towards completion.
