The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is leading a program to construct long-term repairs to damaged infrastructure on State and local roads. Following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on November 30, 2018, DOT&PF sprang into action to restore essential travel routes within five days of the disaster. These (mostly temporary) repairs were made possible thanks to an amazing response from the contractor community, the public, local governments, State forces, and other agencies. The goal of the long-term repairs is to rebuild the damaged roads to their pre-Earthquake serviceable life.

DOT&PF evaluated more than 265 sites across the region and determined over 150 required permanent repairs.  These sites have been grouped into projects based on geography and type of work to be completed. The permanent repair projects are currently in various stages of design and construction and will take several years to complete.

This program is funded by Federal Highway Administration and state funds. Construction on this project is scheduled to start in the spring of 2023 and expected to continue through 2024.
