King Cove Airport Runway Resurfacing

Project # SFAPT00483

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in cooperation with the Alaskan Region of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is proposing to rehabilitate the surface of the King Cove Airport runway.

Purpose & Need

The purpose of this project is to bring the King Cove Airport into compliance with FAA regulations to continue operating safely. Currently, Runway 08-26 softens during the wet season and break-up, resulting in frequent, sometimes lengthy, runway closures. Surfacing material is worn away and large gravel on the runway has caused aircraft damage. Surface visual aids at the airport have outlived their useful lives and require replacement.

Project Description

The proposed project would:

  • Resurface runway 08/26, taxiway, and apron
  • Replace the rotating beacon, wind cone, segmented circle, and apron, taxiway, and runway lighting
  • Improve the airport access road
  • Repair the airport fence and improve signage
Status

The project is in the conceptional design phase. DOT&PF is seeking input from airport users and the public. The DOT&PF design team is hosting a public meeting on November 12, 2024. Comments are being accepted on the Public Involvement page.
