King Cove Airport Runway Resurfacing

Project # SFAPT00483

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing several airport improvements to the King Cove Airport including resurfacing runway, taxiway, apron, and access road, replacement of lighting, fencing and gates repairs, and addressing erosion and ponding issues. DOT&PF has informed Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Alaskan Region of their intent to apply for federal funding assistance for the proposed project.

Purpose & Need

The purpose of the proposed project is to upgrade existing aviation facilities to meet current FAA standards and ensure safe and reliable use of the King Cove Airport. The project is needed to improve the airport runway, taxiway, apron, and access road surfaces which have degraded over time. Additionally, there are areas where fencing needs to be repaired. The main access gate has become inoperable and requires replacement. The segmented circle with wind cone and the supplemental wind cone have exceeded their useful life; also, the segmented circle penetrates the Runway Object Free Area (ROFA). The airport rotating beacon has fallen to the ground due to rust. The airport lighting system has also outlived its life expectancy and requires replacement. There are alders growing inside the ROFA, which now creates an obstruction and needs to be removed. The culverts will be inspected and will be replaced if appropriate.

Project Description

The proposed project would:

  • Resurface Runway 08/26, taxiway and apron
  • Replace the rotating beacon, wind cones and segmented circle (in-kind replacement)
  • Relocate the supplemental wind cone to inside the fence which will require a new pad
  • Resurface segmented circle embankment (moving segmented circle up to 30 feet to be outside ROFA)
  • Resurface the gravel portion of the access road and both wind cone access roads
  • Install or replace signage and utility work as needed
  • Drainage improvements as necessary (e.g., culvert repair, ditch reconditioning, rock armoring, etc.)
  • Performing miscellaneous fencing repairs along the existing fence and replace the existing cantilever gate and operator and double swing gate (See Figure 3, Sheet SC6)
  • Clear vegetation as needed
  • Establish contractor staging area north of the project just beyond the segmented circle (2 acres)

Material is anticipated to be sourced from either the Airport Access Road Quarry or the Lenard Harbor Material Site. Determination will be based on quality of material identified during geotechnical investigation. The project is anticipated to need approximately 26,450 cubic yards of crushed aggregate surface course.

Status

The project is in the design phase. Comments are being accepted on the Public Involvement page.
