False Pass Airport Rehabilitation

Project # SFAPT00500

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in cooperation with the Alaskan Region of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is proposing to rehabilitate the False Pass Airport.

Purpose & Need

The purpose of this project is to bring the False Pass Airport into compliance with FAA regulations and address creek erosion impacts to keep the airport operating safely. The project is needed because airport surfaces, such as the runways and apron, are in poor condition. Airport signage is damaged and missing, and the wind cones are supported by makeshift rock bases. The segmented circle’s painted 55-gallon drums are rusted, crushed, out of position, and no longer visible due to faded paint. Runway 32 experiences storm surge flooding. Further, FAA’s Navigational Aids, the access road bridge, and Runway 14 are at risk due to Round Top Valley Creek erosion and flooding.

Project Description

The proposed project would:

  • Resurface and replace signs and guardrail on the airport access road and repair airport access road bridge abutments, as necessary
  • Raise the end of Runway 32 to mitigate against storm surge and improve drainage
  • Resurface runway 14/32, taxiway, and apron
  • Replace the primary and supplemental wind cone units and the segmented circle
  • Complete erosion control for Round Top Valley Creek
  • Add and replace airport signage, lighting, and retro-reflective markers, clear vegetation, and relocate utilities
Status

The project is in the conceptional design phase. DOT&PF is seeking input from airport users and the public. The DOT&PF design team is hosting a public meeting on November 11, 2024. Comments are being accepted on the Public Involvement page.
