State Project # SFHWY00466 / Federal Project # 0003288
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in coordination with Federal Transit Administration (FTA), is proposing to install three new dolphins along the existing fender line to accommodate the Alaska Class Ferry (ACF) vessel and upgrade the electric apron lifting system to a hydraulic system in Angoon.
The purpose of the project is to make modifications to the existing ferry terminal to better accommodate ACF berthing and mooring needs and upgrade the electric apron lifting system to a hydraulic system. The existing facility is a stern berth facility for Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) ferry vessels. The terminal requires modifications to the mooring dolphins to better accommodate the newly built ACF class vessels (M/V Tazlina) mooring line system.
The proposed project activities consist of the following:
The project is anticipated to occur in late fall of 2026. During construction there may be schedule changes to AMHS ferry service. Potential closure to the AMHS ferry facility could occur during construction for up to three months. There would be temporary noise impacts during in-water pile driving activities over the course of construction. Pile driving activities would occur only during the day.
The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by DOT&PF pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated April 13, 2023, and executed by FHWA and DOT&PF.
