The State of Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing improvements to the Trunk Road/Nelson Road from the end of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) constructed Phase II near the east end of Fetlock Street. The project will lift the road surface, improve pedestrian facilities, remove the old sub-standard bridge, and construct a new bridge across Wasilla Creek to address pedestrian, flooding and safety considerations. Additional improvements may include shoulders, pedestrian amenities, drainage features, and roadside hardware.
The Mat-Su Borough successfully nominated this project through the Community Transportation Program, which allows DOT&PF to address community transportation needs with a combination of local, state, and federal funds. DOT&PF will complete the design, coordinate with utilities, acquire any necessary right-of-way, bid the project, and oversee construction. This portion of Trunk/Nelson Road is owned and maintained by the Mat-Su Borough, and will remain so after construction.
The design was advanced to a 75% Plans-in- Hand project review milestone in August of 2025. Original survey was provided by the MSB, with additional survey collected in 2022 and early 2025. The environmental document for this project was approved in March of 2024 with re-evaluations expected as the design is finalized. Additional environmental field investigations were completed in fall of 2025. Utility coordination is ongoing, and the design team is working on advancing to 95% design milestone in 2026.
