AMHS 2045 Long-Range Plan (LRP)

The AMHS Long-Range Plan sets out to guide the operation and management of AMHS fleet and terminal infrastructure for the next 20 years. The Plan does the following:

  • Reviews existing planning initiatives and inputs.
  • Highlights existing and future opportunities for engagement.
  • Identifies future service scenarios for AMHS served communities - Process elaborated upon in the section below.
  • Identifies the supporting workforce and infrastructure needs to implement scenarios.
  • Outlines a capital replacement plan for our fleet and shoreside facilities.

MV Kennicott Capital Project

The M/V Kennicott capital project is currently underway at Everett Shipyard and Repair (ESR) in Everett, WA.

The Kennicott is undergoing a significant project focused primarily on improving efficiency, reliability, and long-term service life. This project is Federally funded and work being performed consists of ship service diesel generator replacements, machinery control system upgrades, overhauling of the port main engine, upgrades and service improvements to the starboard main engine, alarm and monitoring system upgrades, upgrading engine and generator control systems for enhanced automation and performance, replacement of the waste heat steam boilers, upgrades to the main engine and generator exhaust system, vessel stability assessment upon completion of the work, dock and sea trials, sand blasting and installation of new exterior paint coatings, completion of regulatory required inspections and maintenance, and performance of normal required annual overhaul maintenance. These upgrades will keep the Kennicott operating safely and sustainably for years to come.



Tustumena Replacement Vessel Project (TRV)

As the M/V Tustumena gets older, we are planning ahead for her retirement and replacement with a vessel that provides greater capacity, modernized safety features, increased seaworthiness, and enhanced passenger comfort. High Efficiency Commuter Ferry Project

Initiated in 2023, High Efficiency Commuter Ferry project began with Alaska Department Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF)-AMHS and Southeast Conference (SEC) evaluating the feasibility of hybrid ferries, identifying Ketchikan-Metlakatla and Skagway-Haines as potential hybrid commuter routes. While the specific pilot route, vessel design, and level of service have yet to be determined, public participation is a key focus. Cascade Point Ferry Terminal

A Request for Proposals for the Cascade Point Ferry Terminal Stage 1 - Design Build, Project Number HSHWY00015, will be received until 2:00 p.m., June 13, 2025 at the office of the Contracts Officer, at 6860 Glacier Highway, Juneau, Alaska.
