State Project No. SFHWY00278 | Federal Project No. 0003255
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) and the City of Hoonah are proposing to create a continuous sidewalk from the core of Hoonah out to Pitt Island. The sidewalk would be approximately 0.8 miles long, would start at the intersection of Sea Plane Access Road and Harbor Way and would end at Pitt Island.
A locked gate at the end of the walkway would prevent access to Pitt Island. Individuals would need a permit from the City of Hoonah to access Pitt Island.
Proposed construction activities would include:
Construction is anticipated to begin between mid-July to the end of November 2025. Loud noise associated with pile driving may be heard up to half-a-mile away. Minor disruptions to harbor parking may occur during the sidewalk construction.
The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by DOT&PF pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated April 13, 2023, and executed by FHWA and DOT&PF.
