Stebbins Airport Rehabilitation
IRIS No. NFAPT00792

We are working to rehabilitate the airport in Stebbins, Alaska. Located on the northwest coast of Alaska, the village of Stebbins is not accessible by road and relies heavily on its airport for year-round passenger flights, freight, mail deliveries, and critical medivac services. Rehabilitating the airport will help ensure that operations remain safe and reliable so these essential community services can continue uninterrupted

Why is this work needed?

The airport had its last major rehabilitation in 1996. The existing surface of the runway is in poor shape, there are soft spots that form during heavy rains and in breakup season, and the lighting is outdated and has been damaged by vandalism. The airport needs to be rehabilitated to address these issues, help lower ongoing maintenance needs, and ensure the airport can continue to operate safely.

Work on this project will include:

  • Environmental and cultural surveys
  • Field studies
  • Aeronautical and design surveys
  • Rehabilitating the airport runway surface
  • Rehabilitating the airport runway lighting
  • Updating the aviation forecast
  • Updating the Airport Layout Plan

Project Schedule

We are currently in the design phase of this project. Crews will travel to Stebbins in summer 2024 to complete cultural, wetland, hydrological, and aeronautical surveys. While we are conducting this work in Stebbins, we will meet with community leaders so they can provide feedback on project development and help guide further design. We anticipate that the final design for this project will be begin in 2025 and that construction could start in summer 2027.

This project is being developed in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration.
