Construct a new roundabout at the intersection of Sheep Creek Road and West Tanana Drive. DOT anticipates ROW impacts to relocate the parking facility to the same side of the road as the UAF trail system and the shared use bicycle/pedestrian path.
The purpose of this project is to improve safety, air quality, and reduce wait times for turning traffic movements. The volume and pattern of traffic at this intersection make it a priority candidate for roundabout improvements.
Safety improvements of a roundabout derive from:
The Federal Highway Administration and the State of Alaska have a “Roundabouts First” policy that requires us to consider a roundabout before other potential solutions like a traffic signal. We determined that a roundabout at this intersection will improve safety and reduce wait times for turning traffic. In addition to safety improvements, roundabouts improve air quality by reducing those idle times.
