Northern Region LED Lighting Replacement
Project No. NFHWY00277 / 0002407

Project Description:

We are working to replace existing high intensity discharge (HID) luminaires with light emitting diode (LED) street light luminaires on all major DOT&PF owned and maintained roadways in the Northern Region. We began converting to LED lights in 2019 and expect to be complete with the conversions in Northern Region by the end of 2022.

Purpose and Need:

The purpose of this work is to upgrade the highway street lighting systems to use more efficient and cost-effective LED lighting technology. When constructed, this project will:

A construction worker replaces existing lighting with energy-efficient LED lights along Airport Way in Fairbanks in the winter of 2020.
  • reduce DOT&PF’s maintenance and operations costs,
  • improve highway safety as a result of improved roadway lighting levels and uniformity,
  • provide better operational reliability, and
  • reduce maintenance response effort to repair malfunctioning lights and outages.

Construction activities in 2021 will focus on the Fairbanks area. After this construction season, we expect all Fairbanks-area roads maintained by DOT&PF will have been converted to LEDs. Impacts to the traveling public will be minimal, although there will be some areas where lane closures will be needed for short periods of time and pedestrians may be directed around construction work.

This project is 90% funded by the Federal Highway Administration with a 10% state match.
