The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing to rehabilitate Holmes Road from the Badger/Montgomery intersection to the Badger/Peede intersection, including improvements to non-motorized facilities with consideration of widened shoulders, separated path, sidewalks, or bike lanes.
Project area showing Holmes Road from the Badger/Montgomery intersection to the Badger/Peede intersection.
Holmes Road is a major collector with narrow shoulders, a historically high percentage of truck traffic, and a forecast for continued residential growth. Since the original construction of the gravel road to the Holmes Homestead near Lakloey Drive, this corridor has faced many of the same challenges that still exist today including a limited road structural section leading to on-going road maintenance, limited space for pedestrians and bicycles, and a flat topography that makes drainage a challenge.
Since those early days, development along Holmes Road and directly connected neighborhoods has increased the traffic, generated more pedestrians, and reduced the undisturbed areas needed for stormwater to spread into and infiltrate. Maintenance and operations challenges continue and facilities for non-motorized users is limited. Recently there has been strong and engaged support from the neighborhood for improvements to address these deficiencies which has directly led to the current project.
The following table shows the planned project schedule and is subject to change:
