Nome Bering Street Rehabilitation

We are working on a project to rehabilitate and repave Bering Street in Nome from Front Street to the Greg Kruschek Avenue/Nome Teller Road intersection. In cooperation with this project, Nome Joint Utility System (NJUS) proposes to replace portions of the water and sewer lines between Front Street and West 4th Avenue and replace utility connections along the corridor.

Project area

The purpose of the project is to improve traffic flow and safety to motorized and non-motorized users through the Bering Street/Front Street intersection and along the corridor.

Project work includes:

  • Drainage improvements
  • Asphalt rehabilitation
  • Roadway geometry improvements throughout the corridor
  • Replace and rehabilitate sidewalks, including ADA improvements
  • Traffic sign replacement
  • Replace portions of water/sewer utility lines
  • Center Creek culvert replacement

Construction on this project will start in the summer of 2021 with expected completion by October 2021. Access to businesses will be remain open during business hours, access to churches will be maintained during weekend service hours, and access to residential properties will be maintained at all times.

This project is 91% funded by the Federal Highway Administration with a 9% state match. It is being constructed by contractor Knik Construction Co., Inc. with contract administration and oversight by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.
