Glenn Hwy MP 34-42 Reconstruction

IRIS # Z581040000/Federal # NH-0A1-5(24), IRIS # CFHWY00006/Federal # 0A15033, IRIS # CFHWY00029/Federal # 0A15032

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is working to reconstruct the Glenn Highway between MP 34 at the Glenn/Parks Interchange and MP 42 near Bogard Road / Arctic Avenue in Palmer. This project aims to accommodate increased traffic on the highway and improve safety for all users.

Work on this stretch of road was necessary due to increased traffic and crash rates. Crashes related to left turns and drivers crossing into oncoming traffic were the cause of most fatalities on this stretch of road. By reconstructing the highway into a four-lane divided highway with a grassy median in the center, we aim to reduce head-on and left-turn collisions.

Other work along this corridor will include adding right and left turn lanes with traffic signals, enhancing the Colleen Street Intersection, adding frontage roads, widening the shoulder, and constructing a 10-foot-wide separated pathway along the Glenn Highway.

Project Schedule

This project is split into two phases.

  • Phase 1: Reconstruct the Glenn Highway and construct a 10-foot-wide separated path along the highway between South Inner Springer Loop and Arctic Avenue.
  • Phase 2: Reconstruct the Glenn Highway and construct a 10-foot-wide separated path from the Glenn/Parks Interchange to South Inner Springer Loop. Realign the Colleen Street Intersection and add a traffic signal. Add new frontage roads.

Construction on Phase 1 of the project is complete. Construction on Phase 2 of the project began summer 2023 and is expected to last through the end of 2025.

How will this impact me?

Construction is underway! Be alert to lane shifts, temporary closures, and some delays as crews work on the road. Check 511.alaska.gov for the most up to date traffic information.

The new highway configuration will restrict left turn access at some points due to the new median. Frontage roads are being added to help accommodate these turning restrictions. The reason for this change is to reduce the number of left-turn related crashes.
