Avalanche mitigation to take place this weekend on Parks Highway

(FAIRBANKS, Alaska) – Drivers might encounter delays along the Parks Highway just north of Cantwell this weekend.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) will perform avalanche mitigation at Panorama Mountain at Miles 216-220 Parks Highway. This is in response to heavy snow and two small snow slides this week along that section of the highway.

Crews aim to perform this avalanche mitigation Saturday, Nov. 28, but work also could extend to Sunday, Nov. 29. All work is weather dependent.

Travelers in the area can expect intermittent delays of up to 45 minutes Saturday and Sunday. ADOT&PF asks drivers to use caution in the area and watch for stopped traffic.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities oversees 237 airports, 9 ferries serving 35 communities along 3,500 marine miles, over 5,600 miles of highway and 839 public facilities throughout the state of Alaska. The mission of the department is to “Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.”
