Mr. Smith started with DOT in 1999, and is the Airport Manager for Kodiak State Airport. He is also responsible for six village airports and the island's highway system.
Mr. Smith served in the US Coast Guard from 1986 to 1991 and was a Petty Officer 3rd Class/AE3. He spent 2 tours in Kodiak. His duties were as an avionicsman/navigator aboard HH3F helicopters and while in station, as an aircraft electrician. His missions included Search and rescue all over Alaska. With every 4th day being in ready crew status he saw much of Alaska and had many flights for various duties. These included SAR, medivacs from vessels and remote villages, fisheries/environmental enforcement, and aids to navigation support as well as law enforcement support. A couple of notable missions he was involved with include the sinking of the FV Alaskan Monarch and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill.
