Anchorage Bowl and Eagle River Street Sweeping

Fact Sheet

  • Expiration of prior permits required the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) to enter into a new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit as a co-permitee with the Municipality of Anchorage
  • The new permit was acquired under new and more stringent EPA regulations, requiring increased DOT&PF efforts in training, permit administration, street sweeping, storm drain cleaning and sand storage facility operations
  • DOT&PF contracted with vendors beginning in 2011
  • One vendor will start north, one will start south, providing for quicker coverage of entire service area
  • Stricter performance measures in this year’s contracts will make it easier and quicker to correct performance issues, if any arise
  • Four sweeping efforts with distinct deadlines for will occur annually:

May 15th

  • 1st sweep of arterials*

June 15th

  • 2nd sweep of arterials
  • 1st sweep of residential streets

September 15th

  • 3rd sweep of arterials
  • 2nd sweep of residential streets

October 15th

  • 4th sweep of arterials
  • 3rd sweep of residential streets

 

*Arterials are moderate to high capacity roads carrying large volumes of traffic with speed limits typically between 30 and 50 mph. Commercial areas such as such as shopping centers, business, gas stations are located on them.
