We are working to replace the existing intersection at mile 351 on the Richardson Highway (near North Pole) with an overpass to reduce turning-related crashes. This project is being developed under the Highway Safety Improvement Program in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration.
Construction on this project started in 2025. Be alert to changes in traffic patterns along the Richardson Hwy at between MP 349-352. Expect a single, narrow lane of traffic in each direction with flagging, delays, and a reduced speed of 45 MPH. The Old Richardson Highway is open to right turns in and right turns out only.
Oversized vehicles wider than 12 feet will need to contact traffic@hccontractors.net to pass through the area. The road diversion is 28 feet wide. All oversize loads wider than 12 feet will require a pilot car to stop oncoming traffic at the opposite end of the work zone prior to entering the diversion road. This configuration will be in effect 24/7 through October. Continue to check 511.alaska.gov for traffic updates.
We held two open houses for this project, one in September 2017 and one in July 2022. We appreciate everyone who participated and submitted comments. If you would like more information after reviewing this website, please contact us. You can find our contact information on the sidebar (or below if you’re on a mobile device).
This intersection has a crash rate 2.5 time higher than the statewide average for intersections of this type. Construction of an overpass at this location will reduce turning conflicts and reduce crashes.
You can review the location and type of overpass we selected in the Final Interchange Access Justification Report, available on the sidebar (or below if you’re on a mobile device).
