We're excited to share information about this collaborative project between the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), City of Soldotna, and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to improve Redoubt Avenue and Smith Way in Soldotna, Alaska. This project focuses on rebuilding the roadway foundation and creating a safer and more accessible environment for pedestrians and cyclists using Complete Streets strategies. The project will create a more modern transportation network and continue to serve as an alternate route in case of an emergency blockage at the Kenai Spur Highway and Sterling Highway intersection.

Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in cooperation with the City of Soldotna and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is proposing to rehabilitate Redoubt Avenue (east of N Binkley Street) and Smith Way to improve the roadway foundation and provide elements of a "Complete Streets" design. It will improve the overall experience and safety for all users including pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists of all ages and abilities.

In 2019, this project was accepted into DOT&PF's Community Transportation Program (CTP) after being nominated by the City of Soldotna. The announcement can be found at https://dot.alaska.gov/comm/pressbox/arch2020/PR20-0026.shtml. The project is 91% funded by FHWA's CTP, with the remainder funded by the State of Alaska and City of Soldotna. The total project cost is estimated at roughly $6.5 million, including design, utility relocations, and construction.
During construction, there may be temporary traffic detours; however, access to side streets, residences, and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
Project development began in 2021, and construction is expected to conclude in 2027. Dates are subject to change based on funding availability.
