(FAIRBANKS, Alaska) – The Fairbanks International Airport Police and Fire Department will be conducting a multi-agency triennial exercise on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. to fulfill a Federal Aviation Administration requirement for emergency services response. The scenario-based exercise includes police tactical teams, ambulances and fire apparatus with volunteers acting as victims.

The full-scale exercise is required every three years by the FAA. Area first responders and volunteers will simulate an active shooter scenario as well as an aircraft explosion. The exercise will be held on the south end of the West Ramp including Jetways five and six, baggage carousel two, gates five and six, and the bus plaza. While anyone traveling to or near the airport will notice a heavy police and fire presence, the exercise will largely occur inside and will not be in view of the public.

This exercise will not impact or delay any air travel. Travelers are encouraged to use short term parking for pick up and drop offs at the airport due to the extra traffic in the area, which is free for the first 30 minutes.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities oversees 237 airports, 9 ferries serving 35 communities along 3,500 marine miles, over 5,600 miles of highway and 839 public facilities throughout the state of Alaska. The mission of the department is to “Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.”
