Archangel Creek Bridge Closed to Vehicles

(HATCHER PASS, Alaska) – Effective immediately the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) is closing the Archangel Creek Bridge to vehicle traffic. The bridge is located within the Hatcher Pass Management Area at approximately mile 2 on Archangel Road, just before the Reed Lakes Trailhead and parking area.

The Archangel Creek Bridge will be closed indefinitely until it can be repaired or replaced. During a recent bridge inspection, ADOT&PF engineers determined that the bridge is no longer structurally sound for vehicles. It remains open to pedestrian access to the old mining road and the Reeds Lakes Trailhead. User discretion is advised.

This area receives heavy recreational use during the summer months. Parking is limited and the bridge closure will prevent vehicles from parking at the Reed Lakes trailhead. Travelers should expect additional congestion due to this closure.

Travelers are encouraged to carpool when possible and to park vehicles off the road as much as possible to let others through. Large recreational vehicles and trailers are discouraged.

For recreational use questions, contact Alaska State Parks at 907-745-8950. For mining access questions, contact the Division of Mining, Lands and Water at 907-269-8503.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities oversees 237 airports, 9 ferries serving 35 communities along 3,500 marine miles, over 5,600 miles of highway and 839 public facilities throughout the state of Alaska. The mission of the department is to “Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.”
