Vision Zero Task Force

Fall 2024: Established a Vision Zero Taskforce with the Municipality of Anchorage, the Anchorage Police Department, AMATS, the Mayor's office, and other partners to address pedestrian safety concerns and respond to Anchorage Assembly Resolution requesting both agencies to address pedestrian crashes with 4 actions: lighting, speed limit reductions, public awareness campaign, additional enforcement.

  • Worked with MOA and APD to identify areas for targeted enforcement.
  • DOT&PF initiated change orders for narrower lane striping and enhanced crosswalks on existing repaving projects.
    • Minnesota Drive-additional crosswalk markings
    • Elmore Road-narrower lanes
  • DOT&PF positioned speed feedback carts on Tudor Road & Muldoon Road prior to snowfall in fall 2024. This will resume in spring 2025.
  • As of Feb. 20, 2025, DOT&PF has attended 17 Community Council meetings and a meeting of the Federation of Community Councils to present on speed reductions and other measures to improve pedestrian safety and hear community concerns.
  • CR DOT&PF submitted new HSIP (Highway Safety Improvement Program) nominations (road diets, non-motorized facilities, speed feedback signs, etc.).

Next Steps

  • Lowering the speed limit on Elmore Road as part of the currently active project.
  • Complete speed studies for Tudor & Muldoon corridors.
  • Adding additional traffic signal cameras at intersections without cameras.
  • Incorporating design principles in upcoming urban projects.
