Recommendations for Drivers to Reduce Risk of Collisions with People Walking and Bicycling
DRIVE SOBER
Alcohol, drugs, and some medications slow reaction time and judgment.
STOP FOR RED LIGHTS
AND STOP SIGNS
Come to a complete stop and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.
FOCUS ON THE ROAD
Phones and screens pull your focus off the road. If you need to operate a screened device, pull off the road.
KEEP IT BRIGHT: AVOID ILLEGAL
OR EXCESSIVE WINDOW TINT
Tinted windows reduce contrast and depth perception. Tint also makes it difficult for pedestrians or bicyclists to make eye contact with drivers to determine if thetve been seen.
MODERATE YOUR SPEED
Higher speeds mean less reaction time and the potential of more severe injuries. The chance of a fatality increases exponentially as vehicle speed increases.
BE ALERT TO WHAT OTHER
DRIVERS ARE DOING
If you see someone else stopping unexpectedly ahead of you, slow down and be alert; there may be a pedestrian or bicyclist in the road, or another hazard. Being alert can save a life!
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
Pedestrians, bicyclists, or children might enter the road when least expected. Driving defensively can help you avoid a crash. You can play a key role in safety by anticipating someone else's mistake.
