Amber Shumpert
Amber Shumpert stepped into the role of Regional Safety Officer for the Northern Region with ten years of safety experience. She is an Army veteran who deployed to Afghanistan as an EOD technician (bomb squad), spent some time in a manufacturing facility where she addressed process improvement and industrial hygiene and safety, and worked in Emergency Management for the Fairbanks North Star Borough. She holds a B.A. and an M.B.A. from American Military University and is working on her Ph.D. from Northcentral University.

Ken Murphy
Ken Murphy has lived in Alaska for 13 years and is the Safety Officer for Southcoast Region. He comes from a diverse safety background ranging from Red Dog Mine as Port Medic Safety Officer and Incident Commander, Wildland Fire Medic and ICS National Fire Academy Command and Control of Incidents Operations. With a passion for education and training, he is an instructor for EMS/EMT/ETT, CPR/AED/FA Wilderness First Aid, Remote Medicine Fire Fighter MSHA Blue Card FEMA and ICS. Ken's philosophy on training is it should always be engaging, participate, realistic, reinforcing and frequent.

Mike Tunley title card

Mike Tunley
Mike Tunley is a lifelong Alaskan who was raised in Nome and has spent most of the remainder of his years split between Anchorage, Fairbanks and Bethel; most recently though, he lived in Juneau for three years with his wife and 6-year-old son.  It was there that he began his career with the DOT&PF, serving as the Safety Officer for Southcoast.

His educational pursuits have included the study of Occupational Safety and Health (B.S. OSH) as well as various aspects of the Emergency Services (A.A.S. in Municipal Fire Control, in Public Safety and in Hazardous Materials Control). In addition to previous work as the Safety Professional for a couple of Alaskan businesses, has worked as a Firefighter (municipal and wildland), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT III) and Hazardous Materials Technician.  Michael also spent a number of years working for various airlines in Alaska, large and small, mostly in Ramp Service positions.  In fact, he appeared in an episode of Flying Wild Alaska (Season 2 - Prop, Drop and Roll).

As applied to safety and health in the workplace, Michael is a firm believer in training and education; knowledge is empowering. 

Edsel J. Clayton Jr. title card

Edsel. J. Clayton Jr.
Edsel. J. Clayton Jr. has been the Occupational Safety & Compliance Officer for the Alaska Marine Highway System for 13 years. Before working with the State of Alaska, he honorably served 26 years of Military service: 4 years as Army Medic and 22 Years in the US Coast Guard. Early in the Coast Guard he was a Boatswains Mate doing counter narcotics and served overseas in the Gulf War. He went into the Medical field and served as an Independent Duty Technician onboard ship. He was also trained as a Preventive Medicine Technician by the US Navy. When He made E7 (Chief), Edsel oversaw the operations of a Medical Clinic as the Clinic Administrator before retiring.

Edsel's personal and professional goal is to train and engage employees so that they take ownership of their safety. Their ownership will help to reduce and prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths. That their safety and health is more important than the job. He also likes to ride my motorcycle every chance he gets.

John Osborn title card

John Osborn
With extensive experience in Facilities/Harbor Construction, Maintenance, and Management, John has built a career focused on safety excellence, particularly within oil field and maritime environments. His work has emphasized reducing workplace injuries during high-dollar, high-visibility projects through strategic safety initiatives and fostering a culture of proactive risk management.

A key priority in his approach is providing hazard-specific training to affected personnel, ensuring they are equipped to identify and mitigate risks effectively. By doing so, He strives to reduce workplace accidents and injuries while maintaining a safe and productive environment.

Having transitioned from Southeast Alaska to Fairbanks, John now focuses on international aviation safety. He aims to leverage his expertise to ensure the safety and well-being of employees and customers at Fairbanks International Airport (FAI), upholding the highest standards of operational excellence.
