Multi-Use Trails Program

The Multi-Use Trails Program, authorized under 23 U.S.C. 206, provides federal funding to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for all types of trail users. The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) administers the program statewide, offering competitive grants to support motorized, non-motorized, and diversified trail projects.

Multi-Use Trails funding may be used for trail maintenance and restoration, trailhead and facility improvements, equipment purchases, environmental protection, safety and education programs, and other eligible trail-related activities. Projects are typically carried out by local governments, tribal organizations, state agencies, and nonprofit entities working to improve community access, outdoor recreation opportunities, and safe trail networks.

DOT&PF manages the full lifecycle of each grant, including project selection, environmental review, design, development, and reimbursement of eligible costs. The program emphasizes public involvement, resource stewardship, and support for Alaska’s diverse recreational trail system.

The Multi-Use Trails Program helps ensure that Alaskans and visitors alike have safe, sustainable, and enjoyable access to outdoor recreation across the state.

DOT&PF is pleased to announce that the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) solicitation has been re-opened.

Applicants who submitted an application prior to the program transition do not need to reapply. The solicitation will remain open through February 20, 2026, to ensure all interested applicants have an opportunity to apply.
