The Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) administers the Snowmachine Trail Grant Program to provide reimbursable funding for the development and maintenance of trails used for snow travel. The program supports grooming, marking, and signing of snow trail systems across Alaska, helping ensure safe and reliable winter access.

Funding is allocated where grooming needs are identified statewide, and snowmachine registration fees help sustain a network of groomed trails. Grants are commonly awarded to nonprofit snowmachine clubs, local governments, tribal governments, and other eligible nonprofit organizations to carry out trail grooming and marking activities. All trails must be legally established and properly permitted. The map below highlights some of the eligible trail locations; additional locations may also qualify.

Please note that program funding does not currently support construction activities. If your proposed project may fall outside the permissible reimbursable expenses listed below, contact the DOT&PF Program Manager to discuss your project scope. Construction activities beyond these eligible expenses may require an environmental review process under Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Title 23.

Permissible reimbursable expenses include:

  • Labor
  • Equipment rate reimbursement
  • Trail markers and signage
