Unalaska Airport Master Plan Update

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is updating the 2008 Master Plan for the Tom Madsen Airport (Unalaska Airport).

The airport offers critical infrastructure used by commercial fishing, residents, health services, and others. The right airport configuration will help support air carriers in providing frequent and safe air service. Safety is a priority in airport operations.

The Master Plan focuses on aircraft likely to use the airport in the next 20 years.

After consultation with airport users, City of Unalaska, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and other project stakeholders, DOT&PF has selected a draft preferred alternative for airport layout in the Master Plan:

  • Upgrade runway safety areas per FAA guidance
  • Improve the aprons
  • Provide general aviation facilities
  • Relocate Airport Beach Road to accommodate growth at the airport
  • Provide runway safety features along the road

The Master Plan has also outlined an airport improvement implementation plan that addresses financial, environmental, and construction phasing considerations.
