Several intersections in Fairbanks have an above statewide average intersection crash rate. Planned improvements to reduce the crashes experienced are being funded through the Alaska Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) with an estimated cost under one million dollars. The planned improvements are known countermeasures to reduce the types of crashes occurring at these intersections.
The five intersections are:
- Chena Hot Springs Road @ Nordale Road
- Chena Hot Springs Road @ Old Steese Highway
- Goldstream Road @ Steese Highway
- Goldstream Road @ Old Steese Highway
- Goldstream Road/Sheep Creek Road @ Murphy Dome Road
To improve driver awareness at the stop-controlled leg(s) of the intersections, planned improvements are:
- Increase sign size
- Improve highway lighting
- Install retro-reflective stop bars
- Install transverse rumble strips
Studies have shown that transverse rumble strips, highway lighting and larger signs have reduced crash experience at similar intersections.
