Parks/Richardson Centerline Rumble Strips

Project Scope: Remove existing centerline stripes and install centerline and shoulder rumble strips and new centerline stripes between MP 266 and MP 341 of the Richardson Highway and centerline rumble strips from MP 305 and MP 356 of the Parks Highway.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is proposing to install centerline stripes on the Parks and Richardson highways in 2013. According to the most recently available crash data, there were a combined 27 crashes in the proposed project areas, including three fatalities and numerous other crashes where drivers crossed the centerline. These types of crashes can occur even during dry conditions. Northern Region has proposed rumble strips to mitigate these instances where drivers drift across the centerline into opposing traffic. Centerline rumble strips are widely regarded as the top strategy to reduce these crashes, but have not been used in Northern Region before. The project includes areas on two highways:

  • 75 miles on the Richardson Highway, from MP 266 (north end of the Tanana River bridge at Delta Junction) to MP 341 (near Moose Creek)
  • 51 miles on the Parks Highway, from MP 305 (north end of the Tanana River Bridge at Nenana) to MP 356 (Sheep Creek Road in Fairbanks)
