(Juneau, Alaska) – Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that they will award over $102 million in airport and infrastructure grants to Alaska’s airports. The total includes approximately $72.2 million in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants and an additional $29.9 million in Supplemental Discretionary grants. 

“We are always incredibly grateful of the support we receive from our federal partners but even more so during these challenging times,” said John Binder, Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Deputy Commissioner of Aviation. “The FAA’s AIP funding is awarded to airports annually based on passenger volumes. This funding is critical to continue strengthening not only Alaska’s, but our nation’s aviation infrastructure.”

The federal airport improvement grants will fund a wide array of aviation needs in Alaska. These range from the reconstruction or rehabilitation of runways and taxiways, updating airport master plan studies, to the acquisition of snow removal equipment and construction of essential airport buildings.

Alaska DOT&PF owns and operates 239 airports including the Alaska International Airport System, comprised of Fairbanks (FAI) and Ted Stevens Anchorage (ANC) International Airports. The following state-owned airports have been awarded funding: ANC, Barrow, Bethel, Cordova, Crooked Creek, FAI, Kasigluk, and Nome. To view the full list of airports and grant awards click here.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities oversees 237 airports, 9 ferries serving 35 communities along 3,500 marine miles, over 5,600 miles of highway and 839 public facilities throughout the state of Alaska.
