Why This is Important
82% of the communities in Alaska are not connected to a road/highway system and airports provide a vital link for access to food, mail, schools, travel and medical services.  Not all communities have night time flight access so the department’s goal has been to increase the number of runways with permanent runway lighting by one per federal fiscal year.

What's Being Done
Airports are being upgraded to adequate standards to support nighttime operations, including runway edge lighting.

How We Measure It
Progress is measured by the number of completed projects which improve an airport from a substandard condition not suitable for nighttime aircraft operations to an airport which meets adequate standards for nighttime operations.
