Motor Vehicle Plug-Ins Project
Project No. 0002377/NFHWY00141 (Carlson Center) | 0002376/NFHWY00142 (Big Dipper, Noel Wien, North Pole Library)

The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (ADOT&PF), in cooperation with the Alaska Division of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is proposing to construct motor vehicle electrical plug-ins and related electrical controls in public parking lots located within the Fairbanks North Star Borough at the Noel Wien Library, North Pole Branch Library, the Big Dipper Ice Arena, and the Carlson Center.

Project Purpose

The purpose of the proposed project is to provide additional electrical plug-in coverage in public parking lots. The additional electrical plug-ins are needed to facilitate cold weather starting of vehicles and reduce engine idling time, resulting in lower motor vehicle emissions and improved air quality.

Project Description

The proposed project will provide additional motor vehicle electrical plug-ins in the parking lots of the Noel Wien Library, the North Pole Branch Library, the Big Dipper Ice Arena, and the Carlson Center. Proposed improvements at each site will include:

  • Installation of new outdoor, arctic-grade electrical distribution panels, wiring controls, and wiring devices
  • Construction of new electrical plug-ins mounted on concrete posts
  • Installation of concrete jersey barriers to protect post mounted electrical plug-ins and distribution equipment from damage by motor vehicles
  • Trenching and replacing asphalt paving, curb and gutter, sidewalks, signs, and planters as required to construct new electrical plug-in posts and underground electrical conduit
  • Restriping the parking lot
  • Replacing disturbed landscaping

Construction is planned for Summer 2018.
