Field Studies
Numerous field studies are required in order to prepare environmental documents and design a road within
the project study area. Examples of the field studies currently underway include surveying, environmental surveys,
geotechnical investigations, and engineering evaluations.
The project study area was surveyed during the summer of 2009 to establish known “benchmarks”, or survey points,
of precise location and elevation. These benchmarks are established throughout the area for the purposes of collecting aerial
photography and LIDAR data. This data will be used in conjunction with engineering evaluations and geotechnical investigations
that were performed during the 2009 summer field season to assist in developing feasible project corridors.

Environmental studies were performed in the project study area to evaluate potential impacts to wetlands, wildlife
and their habitats, fish resources, air and water quality, and subsistence use. These studies will continue throughout the
project duration.
For 2010, DOT&PF continues to preliminary engineering and environmental base studies in preparation of
initiating the formal NEPA environmental documentation process.
