The University of Alaska Fairbanks, Northern Institute of Engineering, is performing river studies on the Anaktuvuk, Chandler, and Itkillik Rivers. All three of these rivers currently have very little information available with which to prepare the necessary permitting and design documents for bridges required for this project. The UAF studies will collect new data at these locations, such as snow and spring break-up data, summer discharge information, and general climate conditions.
DOT&PF is working with the Native Villages of Nuiqsut and Anaktuvuk Pass to develop and implement a subsistence monitoring program that complies with North Slope Borough permit stipulations and serves to insure that subsistence resources and users will not be impacted by the current field studies or any future project work. To date, subsistence representatives from Nuiqsut and Anaktuvuk Pass have seen the project first hand, and observed field activities. This program provides an opportunity not only for members of potentially affected communities to be aware of and understand the scope of oning project activities, but also aids DOT&PF staff in understanding the complexity of local subsistence and cultural issues. We will continue this program as fieldwork continues.
