Elliott Highway MP 0-12 Rehabilitation

Project No.: 61039 / 0651(29)

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in partnership with HC Contractors, Inc., is working to rehabilitate the Elliott Highway from its junction with the Steese and Old Steese Highways near Fox (milepost 0) to milepost 12.

Elliott and Steese Intersection

With this project, DOT&PF aims to improve safety and service for the first 12 miles of the Elliott Highway. As part of this effort, we will:

  • Reconstruct 12 miles of road
  • Widen shoulders to 6-foot (current shoulder range from 0-4 foot)
  • Improve safety where warranted by replacing guardrail and establishing flatter side slopes in some areas
  • Rehabilitate the existing Chatanika Bridge (#0836) by:
    • Replacing the bridge deck
    • Repairing minor cracks and spalling
    • Pavement on new deck
  • Improve drainage issues by:
    • Replacing existing culverts
    • Reestablishing ditches
    • Replace fish-passage culverts at:
      • Fox Well Pedestrian Crossing (approximate MP 0.5)
      • Fox Creek (approximate MP 1)
      • Dome Creek (approximate MP 8)
      • Unnamed Creek (approximate MP 12.5)
    • Install new signing and striping
    • Repave and improve Fox Well turnout
    • Clear vegetation to reduce maintenance efforts and improve sight visibility

Notable Traffic Impacts During Construction in 2019:

  • Diversions at MP 11 (starting at Haystack)
  • One-Lane Chatanika River Bridge Beginning May – End July 2019
