The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) and its consultant DOWL HKM are updating the Cold Bay Airport Master Plan. The Airport Master Plan Update will identify and address substantive issues at the Cold Bay Airport, including:
- Runway length
- Safety zones around the runways
- Pavement and lighting conditions
- Runway visibility zone, which restricts development on the airport
- Use of airport land for aviation and community purposes
The community of Cold Bay is located at the western end of the Alaska Peninsula. The Cold Bay Airport serves as a regional hub for passenger, cargo, and mail service between Anchorage and Fairbanks to Cold Bay, King Cove, False Pass, and Nelson Lagoon. It also handles tourists and hunters in the region, seasonal fish charters from Anchorage and Seattle, and is an alternate airport for international transpacific flights. It serves an emergency services role for medevac and some Coast Guard Search and Rescue operations in the region.
